Study on the potential use and limits of biofuels to propel commercial ships
The main objective of the contract is to provide EMSA with a technical study on the opportunity and the potential technical limitations related to the use of biofuels to propel commercial vessels. The stricter SO emission requirements as contained in the revised Annex VI to Marpol and the regular price increases of the marine bunker fuels derived from crude oil have generated interest in exploring the potential of alternative fuels for ship propulsion. Biofuels have been listed among these potential new types of marine fuels. Biofuels are sulphur-free and the use of biofuels would contribute to remove the SO emissions and particulate matters (PM) from shipping. Even if biofuels are not currently used commercially in shipping, pilot projects using biofuels in ships have been conducted successfully, for example by the NOAA in the Great Lakes region. Biofuels are currently more expensive than oil-derived products (including MDO/MGO); it therefore does not provide sufficient incentive to the industry to use them. Nevertheless, a 3rd generation of biofuels, more environmentally friendly, made out of biomass like wood and algae should further increase the production and should have a positive impact on the price of biofuels.
