… Core.The Core network is required to manage all internal and external communications of INL, and therefore it shall have a high-capacity, high-availability configuration, as detailed in the ‘A.CS - Core Switch’ section below. The ‘A.ES - Edge Switch’ described below shall provide the external connections for the network, and rely on an IP-PSTN gateway for voice connectivity (see E.IPGW - IP-PSTN Gateway).The Distribution network will support most of the networked devices on INL. This will include Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) voice devices, video conferencing solutions, Wi-Fi access points, and workstations. This network will scale according to the INL future requirements.

Wireless communications: Wireless communications (Wi-Fi) shall be available on all of the INL building on floors 0 and 1, and some outdoor areas (except for the clean room area). The access point ports are available according to the map in the specification documents totalling 31 indoor access points (AP) and at least 2 outdoor AP. This network must be able to provide data services for at least 600 devices, including ‘guest’ devices. All of the devices should be deployed by the end of 2011. All devices must be Wi-Fi Alliance certified, and abide to the Frequency Plan defined by Portuguese National Communications Authority (Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações - ANACOM). The minimum speed of operation for any INL laptop client device with an internal Wi-Fi adapter must be 9 Mbps. A post installation site survey must be conducted by the Bidder to ensure coverage and performance requirements.

Network security: A firewall is required at two points in the logical network design (see 0). This solution shall be part of the Core Network therefore it must have a high throughput capacity, have high availability features, and be capable of implementing security policies across several network layers. It must be capable of accommodating a multi-homed internet access scenario. An Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) must be part of this solution.
